As our readers will know, Windows 8 Developer Preview was released yesterday. This version of Windows 8, as suggested by the name, is meant for developers who wish to develop Windows 8 apps in the future. It is not the complete version of the OS that will be released sometime in 2012.

While we�ve already written an easy to follow guide on how to install Windows 8 in VirtualBox, but there are plenty of people who want to, but would rather not try out an incomplete OS. Such people can get a slice of the Windows 8 action with Newgen: a Metro style launcher for
Windows Vista and Windows 7. Previously however, you could simply use Mosaic or Eight, which were great alternative for Newgen but they weren�t that good in terms of looks back then.
Developed by speaker60 and 1000MrCasper and released on the open source project community CodePlex, Newgen aims to bring the ultra-Metrofied Start menu to current desktop PCs running Windows Vista or 7.

We�ve personally tested the application and can confirm that it mostly works as claimed. It takes some tedious work setting up exactly as you want, but since it is a new app, it is to be expected.
After you�ve got the app installed, you launch it from the Start menu on your PC. On launching, you are treated to a very good-looking Metro style Start menu where you can add tiles, widgets and direct links to websites of your choice. They can be added by calling up the Start Menu (left-click on the right edge of the screen) and then right-clicking, which will show up options for you to add said items.
The transitions and overall UX is similar to what Microsoft offers with Windows 8�s launcher though, obviously, Newgen isn�t as full-featured as the real thing. However, there are plenty of settings you can tinker around with in order to customize your experience.

Microsoft Sold 40 Million Windows 8 In A Month

It�s been a month since the launch of Windows 8 on October 26. The reaction has been mixed, some users praising the new UI, while others think it�s the worst thing to ever happen to personal computing. Despite all of that, Windows 8 seems to be doing pretty well for itself.

Tami Reller, CFO for MIcrosoft�s Windows division, announced today at the Credit Suisse 2012 Annual Technology Conference that the company has sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses in just a month. Reller also said that Windows 8 is outpacing Windows 7 in regards to upgrades.

Beyond that, the company said that the Windows Store has seen some success thus far. Without citing specific numbers, the company reported that a number of apps have earned more than $25,000 in revenue since launching on the Windows Store. In a bid to get more developers on board, Microsoft also reminded everybody that developers get to keep 80 percent of all app revenue over its lifetime.

Windows 8 is doing pretty well, but Microsoft is remaining mum on other Windows 8 devices like the Surface and Windows Phone 8. A recent report says that the Nokia Lumia 920 is doing well, but there�s been no word on how well HTC or Samsung�s Windows Phone 8 devices are performing. The Surface, however, is where the worry starts to seep in. Despite selling out of pre-orders for the base model, Microsoft has remained silent on just how well it�s doing beyond Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer saying sales were �modest.�

Microsoft�s newest OS may be off to a decent start, but it�s the future that most are worried about. The recent departure of Windows boss Steven Sinofsky did not look good despite MIcrosoft�s attempts at making it seem like an amicable split.

It�s looking pretty good for now, but Microsoft shouldn�t slow down. It needs to continue building out the Windows Store and attracting developers to the platform. The shared kernel between Windows 8 devices, including PCs, phones and tablets, is the best thing Microsoft has going for it at the moment.

Microsoft Office for iPad images leaked few months ago suggesting that Microsoft Office for iPad could launch soon. The Daily published this information at that time, but Microsoft denied the report but The Daily stood by the report.

Now BGR is reporting that Microsoft is working on both Android and iOS versions of the Office suite. According to BGR Microsoft Office for Android and iOS might launch by November. Office suite hugely popular on the desktops is almost absent on the tablets and smartphones. Apple dominates the tablet market with iPad and it is natural to think that Microsoft doesn�t want to miss this opportunity to put Office on iOS devices. Office has been a cash cow for Microsoft. 


BGR�s source has reportedly seen the iOS version of the Office suite and is identical to the leaked image we have seen before. The loading screen in the app clearly said �Office for iOS� instead of Office for iPad, that means Office for iPhone and iPod devices will also be available along with Office for iPad.

Microsoft might think to promote its Office suite on Windows 8 tablets and Windowsphone devices, but Windows 8 tablets are not yet in the market and Windows phone is not a success so far compared to Android and iOS. Android and iOS rule the smartphone and tablet market, so it makes perfect sense that Microsoft might want to release Office for both these platforms.

If at all released Microsoft Office for Android and iOS would be welcome, and coupled with SkyDrive you could access and edit office files on your smartphone and desktop PC and keep them in sync.
