Why Join?

I normally don’t encourage readers to submits blogs to directories unless the directory is extremely well developed and worth trying. I have seen blogs from this directory appearing in Google Search Results page (SERP) and I think this can contribute some amount of traffic if you use it effectively by engaging with users and asking for more and more votes. I will recommend it for starters who need an initial boost up in their traffic and readership.

Is Directory Submission a Waste of Time?

Blog-DirectoriesDriving continuous flow of traffic to your blog is a wish that never seems to end. With the growing expansion of social media networks and creation of more advanced search engines, traditional methods of driving traffic to your blog is slowly loosing its importance. Indeed Blog directories that once flooded the blogosphere are loosing reputation considerably. Check your Google Analytics and discover it for yourselves that how much Traffic are these directories paying you in return for their reciprocal links and banners? I am sure the answer would not be a delightful one. So today we are going to remove all doubts regarding directory submission and will try to educate you all with something that may be worth trying.

Why Should You not Submit Your Blog to Blog Directories?

Following are some of my strong reasons against this tradition.
Reason #1
search_engine
When there is competition then quality service emerges by its own. Five years back Search engines were battling with one another to reach a status and today we finally have Google as an ever developing Search Engine that has turned out to be a multi million dollar company now. Before 2005 blog directories were trusted and often visited by all international traffic to find blogs of their interest and read the specific articles. But today what do you do when you have to find an answer to a problem? Of course you Google it. Who will in todays hectic life would waste time navigating blog directories in order to read content of their interest.
Reason #2
Most Blog directories seem inactive and their service seem dead. Many exist today just by name with no active query service. You will have to wait for weeks in order to get something done. For instance I once submitted my blog to xyz.com (This anonymous directory has good PR and traffic but dead!) with my previous domain tnt-by-stc and when I changed to mybloggertricks. I requested them to kindly update my domain and months past but got no reply. I had to then remove my URL from the list.
Reason #3
Most of these directories share reciprocal links which means in order to submit your blog to them you will have to add their banner or link to your homepage. This surely benefits them but harms your search engine ranking. Its best when people link you. But when you link websites which are not in your niche, you simply flow your precious PR juice in waste!
Reason #4
Most Blog directories have no authority. Directories with PR<3 and with Alexa Rank> 100,000 itself have no proper traffic then how can it benefit you? Many of these directories have Alexa Rank in 132,000 which means they receive around 300-400 daily visitors.
Reason #5
Linking Directories and adding their banners on your homepages diverts your traffic and effects your PR. Ask yourself what impression do you get from blogs which have long list of ugly banners added on their sidebars? The first impression that you get is that Man he is just a newbie!
You blog needs a professional touch and your readers want a clean touch. Serve them with justice.

Do not be a Blind Blogger!

Blind Blogging
A good blogger is one who respects what others share but do not take things blindly. You should test what others are advising and examine if they really make some sense. Almost every tutorial on Blog Directories tell you that by submitting your Blog to one of them can boost your Traffic significantly. But your criteria of work should be such that you must always keep a good look at your Google Analytics and ensure if a particular Directory is bringing you some traffic. If they are bringing you one or five visitors a month then you must rethink your idea of submission and may give priority to what is more important.

Are All Directories not useful?

Well of course not. There are some directories where search engine robots love to crawl. They sometimes provide the biggest hits and do really contribute in building fair traffic. It can be accepted to some extent that well established Directories like DMOZ and Yahoo Directorydo bless you with good PR and Traffic but then again the traffic even from these directories is temporary.
For newbie Bloggers Who wish to drive readers to their Blogs, I have shared below some Directories which can help you to some extent.
But again dont add their widgets. Just add their code in your templates. Keep your template as clean as possible. Add only those widgets which the readers want and not those which makes your blog look like a Widgets Shop.

What is Alternative to Blog Directories?

search_engine_optimization
The answer is simple. Its all about better understanding the Search Engine crawling, indexing and ranking criteria more and more. In other words, do what Search robots love and stop what they hate. I may be sounding complicated here but my future posts on SEO will help you better understand how exactly are people getting several visitors a day by making use of their good optimization skills.
Optimizing your Blog is the easiest but the most significant thing when it comes to achieving your Online Goals. The only way to drive consistent and good traffic is to write what the current era demands and give more importance to Post titles, Post frequency and search engine likings. Simple but fact. I will write consecutive posts on SEO from today on wards. I will try my best to make this SEO term look more like eating chocolate for all of you. Things that will be required will be shared and those tips that never helped will surely be avoided.
Thats All!
Hope you may understand my point and may take mature steps in making your Blog a place where readers may find comfort. Do let me know about any interesting story that you may wish to share with all of us. Peace and blessings 🙂

Offline Blogging With Windows Live Writer

Windows live writer
Yes! you can blog offline. With growing technology like Windows Live Writer blogging is no more limited to your dashboard. You can write, save and publish posts right from your computer without signing in your blogger account. Blogger HTML editor lacks many features when it comes to writing a good looking post. On contrary windows live writer is a software built by Microsoft Corporation which contains every feature that Blogger lacks.
I hate blogging without Windows Live Writer! I am sure many bloggers would agree with me on this point.
Some of the things you cant do with Blogger HTML editor are,

  • You can not write HTML code just the way it looks in blogger editor because the code is interpreted as a command and blogger editor converts it to how it may look in a browser.
  • You cant resize an image to whatever size you like because you are provided with only three options i.e Small, Medium and Large size.
  • The font type and font size is limited.
  • You can not undo what you have done (Going backward).
  • You cant align images to the left or right of your intro paragraph.
  • You can not add effects to your images, like shadow effect, rounded corners, emboss, blur etc.
  • You can not post an image in its original size
  • You can not insert tables in your posts because no table option exists
  • You can not open a link in a new window unless you edit the HTML
  • You can not add a world map to your posts
  • And much more

You can not do all above in a compose mode unless you add or change the HTML code in your HTML editor. But editing HTML would seem difficult for a newbie whilst pretty easy for a professional. Since most people like me have limited knowledge about editing HTML, blogger editor is of little use to all of us. Luckily! Windows Live Writer comes to our rescue. It can to do what ever blogger editor can not. It contains every feature a blogger is looking for. One of the best things I like about it is that it saves a copy of your blog interface/theme and when you write posts, it will be just like writing a post straight into your blog. See the image below to understand what I mean to say,

Moreover your images can be displayed in two different ways look below,

Create Blogger Backup For Images And Get Image URLs

Backup-Images-in-BloggerMany bloggers including some professional ones suggest to store Blogger images on services likewww.Photobucket.com , www.tinypic.cometc. but I really dont understand why would someone do that when one has unlimited Image storage and bandwidth inside Picasa web albums that is where Blogger saves all your images. Well its time to change the way people use Blogger and we are here to let you help make better use of resources available to you.

Today I will share a different way of managing all your images in blogger by letting you know how to create a Backup for all your images and we will also learn how to get Unique URLs for images. This tutorial will also help you in reducing your blog load time by 40% i.e 150-200kb

To create an Image Backup you will need to do the following,

  • Go To Blogger
  • Create a draft Post and name it Backup For Images
  • Now start uploading all your images to blogger using the normal method. These images can be images that you have saved elsewhere and have link to it in your blogger template. For example: Background Image, Sidebar Headers, Icons, Header Background etc. If you scan your template you will find many image URLs inside the CSS part that starts from <b:skin> and ends at </b:skin>. An image URL/link can end as .gif  | .png  |  .jpeg   |  .bmp etc. Open each URL/link in your browser and save the image in your Hard Drive by right clicking on it and then choosing Save Image As
  • Once you have uploaded all your images, your backup will look like that of mine,

BACKUP FOR IMAGES

  • Now Comes the interesting part. In order to get Image URLs and use them somewhere inside your blog template or sidebar widgets, you will need to do the following,
    • Make sure you are using Firefox Browser
    • Click the Preview Link at the top-right corner of your Backup post

    Preview-link

    • Once the images are displayed below the draft post, simply right click on your desired image and then choose Copy Image LocationCopy-Image-Location
    • Now paste this Image URL inside your Browser Address bar,

Paste-Image-URL-in-Browser-

  • Your Image URL will look something like the one below,
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_7wIwo/Spr1Lxjk6I/AABu0/uS0zY4/s400/MyTricksTime.jpg

The important part in this link is s400 . If you want the image to appear in full size then change s400 to s1600 . The image will appear in its original size.

Now this is how I store all my images and get their unique URLs. This way you will never loose images. By adding such image URLs to your blogger templates, you will observe a significant decrease in the load time of your blog.
I will publish a detailed post tomorrow on how to reduce Blog Load time. Make sure you dont miss it.
